I especially like the comment of Frank Harrell: It's interesting that SAS Institute feels that non-peer-reviewed software with hidden implementations of analytic methods that cannot be reproduced by others should be trusted when building aircraft engines.

Okay, as a SAS marketing person I come to this discussion with a bias. But we're not haters of open source or R. Take a look at this post from Anne Milley who was quoted in the Times. It's at http://blogs.sas.com/sascom/
